Battle Royale

A new Canadian gymnastics series in a team-only playoff format. Teams compete on the apparatus for cash prizes, at one arena, over one weekend. Mini Royale runs on the Saturday. Battle Royale runs on the Sunday.

What this is

Battle Royale is a new gymnastics competition in a team-only format. Teams compete on the apparatus at one arena, over one weekend. It runs as an elimination format. Teams compete in staged rounds, from qualification through to the final, and the best teams come out on top and win large cash prizes. The format is built to be easy for any spectator to follow, and to fill an arena.

The headline event

Battle Royale

High performance. A team can be women, men, or both. Ages 16 and over. Minimum four gymnasts, no maximum. Qualification, semi-final and final, all on the Sunday.

The larger field

Mini Royale

Women's artistic under Xcel Platinum rules. Ages 13 to 17. Teams of five to eight. Qualification on the Saturday, final on the Sunday on the Battle Royale floor.

A team event: No all-around, no apparatus finals. The team standing is the only result.
Mixed teams: A team may combine women and men. It may also be all women or all men. Mixed is permitted, not required.
Across clubs: Gymnasts from different clubs and different countries may team up.
Open invitational: No federation or national-team membership required. International teams welcome.
Specialists welcome: A gymnast does not have to compete every apparatus. A gymnast can compete a specialty. A routine can be modified for safety, or to test a new skill.

At the arena

Teams compete head to head on six apparatus over two days. The field shrinks each round, from 32 teams to 12, then to 4 for the final. The final runs like an apparatus final. Teams choose their gymnast and their apparatus in real time as rival scores land, and the gymnast performs while everyone watches.

Why add this to your calendar

This competition is designed to complement the calendar you have already booked, rather than to compete with it. Entry is low cost for a gymnast. Training in the gym is one thing. Doing routines in the gym is another. Competing is different again. The best gymnasts compete more often than everyone else, and this meet gives your athletes the chance to do that. Your specialists compete where they are strongest, without training an all-around. Your athletes get an arena, a crowd, and a team to compete for.

Entering a team

* A gymnast already registered in the Development Program, or in JO, can still enter Mini Royale and compete. Battle Royale is an independent competition.

Men contest four apparatus. Pommel horse and parallel bars are excluded.

Apparel: No singlet requirement. The team must match, and everyone competes in compression. Baggy clothing draws a deduction under the Code of Points. This applies to both competitions.

Two weekends. Mini Royale qualifies on the Saturday. Battle Royale runs the Sunday at the same arena.

What it costs

Per gymnast and per coach, in Canadian dollars. Late pricing adds a flat fifty dollars for every entrant at every level. It opens two weeks before registration closes.

Rates are before HST. Parking is $6 per night. The minimum stay is two nights. Each delegation books its own rooms.

Prize money is awarded to the team. Each team names a captain who supplies one payment address, and we pay within 30 days. How a team divides the money, among the gymnasts, to their club, or to an NCAA school, is the team's own business. Swag bags go to the top twelve teams in each competition.

This is a team event. Every routine is judged the same way, and each routine contributes points to the team.

Your rank is your score

Every routine is ranked against the other routines on the same apparatus. First place takes 100 points. Last place takes 0. Every other place lands evenly between. Your team points are the share of the field you beat.

That is what lets a beam routine and a high bar routine contribute equally to one leaderboard. The gaps depend on the size of the field. The same place earns fewer points in a smaller field.

Team event: Every routine a team performs counts towards their final team score.
Drop scores: None. All routines count, and team points reset between rounds.
Sole entry: The only entry on an apparatus scores a neutral 50.

↻: A gymnast may perform the same routine more than once, and again in later rounds. Three routines on beam can be three different gymnasts, or one gymnast three times.
⌖: Vault is the only apparatus where the women's and men's caps are shared. Every other apparatus counts separately, so a mixed team may enter two on women's floor and two on men's floor.
◷: Standard time limits in qualification. A 120-second hard limit in the semi-final and the final, with no extension for falls.
★: In the final, teams choose their gymnast and apparatus in the moment, as rival scores land.

Judging

Two panels per apparatus, one judge each. One panel evaluates difficulty and the other evaluates execution. The panel structure is the series' own. Each competition is judged at its own level, set out under How routines are judged. The percentile conversion happens after the scores are submitted, so it does not change how a judge works.

The deciding round

Ties are broken on total summed execution, then total summed difficulty. If it is still level, the highest-scoring routine is removed from both teams and the comparison runs again. That repeats until one team leads. If it never breaks, the teams split the prize.

Think of it as a gymnastics playoff. Teams earn points routine by routine, the field shrinks each round, and four teams compete for the title in the final.

Sunday only: The whole Sunday: Battle Royale qualification, the Mini Royale final, and the finals show.
Both days: Everything, both days. Buying Saturday always includes Sunday.
VIP: VIP is the same price either way, so it always covers both days. You sit at the judges' viewpoint, two to three metres from the apparatus.
Ambassador code: An ambassador code cannot be applied to a group booking. The two are alternatives, not layers.

About the name

Despite the name, this is not a combat event. "Battle" refers to the head-to-head format, the team identities and the elimination rounds. The athletes perform standard gymnastics routines.

Registering

Teams register on Gym Art Meets. A free account, no prior Gym Art account needed.

Gym Art Meets: On the platform your club name is your team name. Enter the exact name your team will compete under.
→: Create an account, create a club profile, build your gymnast and coach rosters, find the meet, add your team, and pay. Your spot is not held until payment completes.
$: Credit card in the cart, or e-transfer with your team name in the memo.
Insurance: Canadian athletes are covered by the event's own insurance, including injury. You do not need to arrange your own.International athletes must carry travel insurance that covers sports incidents. A plain travel policy usually excludes them.
Coaches and judges: Coaches need NCCP Level 2 or equivalent plus Safe Sport certification for floor access, in the applicable discipline.Judges hold National or Brevet status and complete the Safe Sport course. Volunteers and staff clear a vulnerable sector check.
